  37. I. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION.
  38.  
  39. WWPlus is a program for organizing and displaying Windows 
  40. wallpaper files. With this program you can easily maintain a 
  41. collection of wallpapers, automatically change them at an interval you 
  42. select, and use image formats (GIF, PCX, TGA, TIF, .ICO and .JPG) that 
  43. would otherwise be unusable by Windows as wallpaper. GIF and PCX 
  44. provide compression of 256-color images, and .JPG provides compression 
  45. for 16-million color images, thus saving disk space.
  46.  
  47. There is a screen saver module that will turn your wallpaper files 
  48. into a screen saver after a period of inactivity.  Extensive setup 
  49. options, including password protection, are available both from the 
  50. Windows Control Panel Desktop icon and from the main WWPlus screen.  
  51. Sixteen transition effects are available.  Users may select a single 
  52. effect or a menu of effects that will occur randomly.
  53.  
  54. WWPlus has editing features and file conversion routines built in, 
  55. which allow you to change images to suit your wallpaper needs.  You 
  56. can crop, resize, stretch, rotate, mirror, flip, sharpen, soften, and 
  57. adjust brightness, contrast and gamma.
  58.  
  59. Wallpapers may be tiled (small images displayed in multiples to fill 
  60. the entire screen) or not, individually determined.  Each non-tiled 
  61. wallpaper may be precisely positioned anywhere on the screen, not just 
  62. centered (the Windows default).  Non-tiled images may be resized 
  63. on-the-fly to full screen or a user-set dimension.  A universal gamma 
  64. correction option allows for display-time lightening or darkening of 
  65. images.
  66.  
  67. Multiple sets of wallpapers called "queues" may be built, with easy 
  68. changing of queues.  A wallpaper may appear in more than one queue.  
  69. Some program configuration items are maintained with the queue, others 
  70. are "Global."  Queues may be specified as command line options, and 
  71. the .QUE extension may be associated with WWPlus to allow the program 
  72. to start by running the queue from File Manager or Program Manager 
  73. icons.
  74.  
  75. Full documentation is included in the form of a Windows Help file.  
  76. When you desire help, press your F1 function key for context-sensitive 
  77. help, or press the help key if you are in a file dialog box.
  78.  
  79. WWPlus contains functions which can read and right the .GIF format, 
  80. which contains compression technology covered by U.S. Patent No. 
  81. 4,558,302, owned by the Unisys corporation.  The author of WWPlus has 
  82. obtained a license from Unisys, and pays a royalty on each 
  83. registration, to use this technology. The following statement is 
  84. required by that license:
  85.  
  86.     "Use of this software is permitted only to the extent
  87.     reasonably required to determine whether to purchase
  88.     the software.
  89.  
  90.     "After payment is made, use of this software is limited
  91.     to use on only a single personal computer or
  92.     workstation which is not used as a server.  An
  93.     additional payment is required for each use on
  94.     another personal computer or workstation.
  95.  
  96.     "Only a single copy may be made of this software
  97.     solely for backup or archival purposes.  The software
  98.     may also be transferred to a single hard disk.

  100.     "Any use of this software in violation of the above is

  112. II. Program requirements.
  113.  
  114. WWPlus requires an IBM compatible 386 or better, running 
  115. Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT, with at least 8 megs 
  116. of RAM and VGA or better graphics.  Recommended: 486DX with 12 
  117. or more megs of RAM and accelerated graphics adapter.
  118.  
  119. Some operations require a mouse.
  120.  
  121. Graphics files can be quite large, particularly with true-color, so a 
  122. large hard disk is recommended.  WWPlus will require under 2 
  123. megs for program installation.
  124.  
  125. III. Installing WWPlus
  126.  
  127. If you obtained WWPlus by downloading it from a computer Bulletin 
  128. Board (BBS) or another online source, one necessary file may not have 
  129. been included.  You will need a file called VBRUN300.DLL, which is 
  130. almost always available from any source that would have WWPlus.  On 
  131. BBS systems the file will usually be called VBRUN300.ZIP or 
  132. VBRUN3.ZIP.  If you obtained the program on disk, the file should be 
  133. included.  If it is missing, contact the supplier of the program.  
  134. Registered versions obtained from the author will always include 
  135. VBRUN300.  If you are installing VBRUN300 separately, it MUST be put 
  136. in the \Windows\System directory.
  137.  
  138. To install WWPlus, run the included setup program.  If the 
  139. program is on a floppy disk, you can use File/Run in the 
  140. Program Manager and type a:setup or b:setup, whichever drive is 
  141. involved.  You can use the same technique to run setup from a 
  142. directory on your hard drive by supplying the full path, such 
  143. as c:\temp\setup.  Alternatively you can use File manager to 
  144. find the files and double-click on SETUP.EXE.  Do not use any 
  145. SETUP.EXE that is not in the same directory as the WWPlus files.
  146.  
  147. Windows 95 users can use the "Add/Remove Programs" item in the 
  148. Control Panel to find and start SETUP.  Again make sure that 
  149. the SETUP you are starting is in the directory where your 
  150. WWPlus distribution files are located.
  151.  
  152. At the end of the setup operation you will be given the option of 
  153. adding WWPlus to your Startup Group.  Doing so will cause the program 
  154. to start whenever you start a Windows session.  This is the 
  155. recommended procedure; you can always delete the icon from the group 
  156. at a later time if you wish.
  157.  
  158. NOTE: Setup will not run if any other program is using VBRUN300.DLL or 
  159. any other library file used by the program, including other versions 
  160. of WWPlus.  An error message will be generated, and you must end all 
  161. such applications before retrying the installation.  You may restart 
  162. these programs after installation is completed - they will share the 
  163. VBRUN module without problem.
  164.  
  165. IV.  Getting Started.
  166.  
  167. Double-click the WWPlus icon to start the program.  The first time 
  168. that the program starts it will be a full program window. Click 
  169. the "folder" icon at the left end of the icon bar, and then 
  170. browse for image files to add to the wallpaper queue.  There 
  171. will be normally be images in your Windows directory, and you 
  172. may have others which you have obtained.  If the images are 
  173. small ones which you would like to have "tiled," check that 
  174. option in the dialog.  After you have selected OK in the 
  175. dialog, you will see the files listed in the queue.  
  176. Double-Click one and see it become your wallpaper.
  177.  
  178. In later sessions, once images have been added, the program will 
  179. start as an icon which you may double-click at any time to 
  180. show the main window.  If you have chosen the hidden icon 
  181. option, the program will not be visible when started.  Simply 
  182. start it a second time; the first instance will become visible 
  183. and the second will end itself.
  184.  
  185. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the program elements on 
  186. screen.  If you press the F1 key, a help file will be displayed, and 
  187. you may graphically choose different program elements to see an 
  188. explanation of their function.
  189.  
  190. When you move your mouse pointer across the toolbar icons and some 
  191. other screen elements a small "Tool Tip" will appear to give you 
  192. a better idea about what the icon does.  You may turn these captions 
  193. off when you no longer need them, via the Preferences menu.
  194.  
  195. There are a number of options for how an image may be 
  196. displayed.  Look for these topics in the help file:
  197.     Tiling.
  198.     Resizing Wallpaper to fit Screen.
  199.     Adjusting Wallapaper Placement.
  200.     Gamma Adjustments.
  201.  
  202. You may perform a variety of editing functions on an image by 
  203. selecting it in the Wallpaper Queue and then clicking the 
  204. "Edit" button.  The first time you do this, press the F1 key 
  205. when the editor is visible and browse through the help file for 
  206. explanations of the editing functions.
  207.  
  208. You may set up a screen saver to use your wallpaper images.  
  209. Choose "Screen Saver Setup" in the Screen Saver menu, or click 
  210. the setup icon.  There will be three tabbed pages of entry, 
  211. exit, and effect choices, with a test button to see what it is 
  212. like.  Click the help button in this dialog for more 
  213. information.
  214.  
  215. There are a number of items in the Wallpaper, Screen Saver, and 
  216. Preferences menu that affect the way the program operates.
  217.  
  218. V.  FILES THAT MAKE UP WWPLUS.
  219.  
  220. The program files are compressed prior to setup.  They are listed here 
  221. with their compressed and uncompressed names. The setup program only 
  222. copies a file to your disk if it does not find the file already or if 
  223. this file is newer.
  224.  
  225. References to the WWPlus directory refer to the directory selected at 
  226. installation; default is C:\WWPLUS

  254. VBRUN300.DL_   VBRUN300.DLL Library File, Windows\System directory 
  255. ***note:  VBRUN300.DLL may not be included if the program was obtained 
  256. from an online source.  It will have to be obtained to run the program 
  257. and the setup program.  From on-line sources, it is usually 
  258. VBRUN300.ZIP or VBRUN3.ZIP.  If the program was obtained on disk then 
  259. the file should be included; if not, contact the source of the disk.  
  260. If the file is obtained separately, it must be installed in your 
  261. Windows\System directory BEFORE you run setup.
  262.  
  263. FILES ALTERED BY WWPLUS:
  264.  
  265. CONTROL.INI  WWPlus will add a section called [ScreenSaver.WWPSaver].  
  266. Global parameters for both the program and the screen saver module are 
  267. stored here.
  268.  
  269. VI.  Troubleshooting.
  270.  
  271. If you receive a message which says something like "Unable to install 
  272. VBRUN300.DL_" during the program install, it means that you have a 
  273. version of WWPlus that originally included the VBRUN file but it is 
  274. not present.  You can solve this two ways: copy VBRUN300.DLL to the 
  275. directory where the rest of the distribution files are and rename it 
  276. VBRUN300.DL_, or else use a text editor (such as Windows Notepad) to 
  277. edit the file SETUP.LST.  Remove the listing for VBRUN300.DL_ and save 
  278. the file.  The VBRUN file will still have to be located in your 
  279. Windows\System directory, but the setup won't try to reinstall it.
  280.  
  281. If WWPlus has been working fine, but suddenly will not load, the queue 
  282. file may have become corrupted.  Try starting WWPlus from the command 
  283. line with a new queue selected (one that doesn't already exist).  
  284. Choose Run from the Program Manager file menu, and type 
  285. C:\WWPLUS\WWPLUS.EXE C:\WWPLUS\TEST1.QUE (if your wwplus directory has 
  286. a different name, use that instead, and if the test1.que exists, use a 
  287. different name).  If the program starts, try changing the queue to the 
  288. one you were using before.  If it crashes at that point, the best 
  289. solution is to delete that queue completely.  This will not 
  290. remove the image files, just the index which you can manually 
  291. rebuild.
  292.  
  293. A related problem can occur if a file has become corrupted and the 
  294. Change Wallpaper at Startup preference is selected.  If that is the 
  295. next file to be used, WWPlus may crash when trying to load a corrupt 
  296. wallpaper.  The cure would be the same as shown above.
  297.  
  298. If you have an image that WWPlus will not display, it may be in a 
  299. format that cannot be used.  There are some variations of .GIF and 
  300. .PCX that are known to make problems for WWPlus.  There are many 
  301. non-standard versions of JPEG that will cause problems.  If you can 
  302. load them into another image editing program you may be able to save 
  303. it in a usable format.
  304.  
  305. WWPlus expects image file names to match their formats. If you have a 
  306. .BMP image but give it a .GIF name, the program will not be able to 
  307. read it.
  308.  
  309. VII. Uninstalling WWPlus
  310.  
  311. The following information is provided if you would like to remove 
  312. WWPlus from your computer.
  313.  
  314. If you have used WWPlus as a screen saver, the first thing to do is to 
  315. change your Windows screen saver to another program or to "None."  
  316. Open the Windows Control Panel in your Main Group, and open the 
  317. Desktop item.  Look at the Screen Saver Name.  If WWPlus is the screen 
  318. saver it will say "WWPSAVR."  Use the drop-down selection to pick 
  319. another screen saver or (none).  Close the dialog.
  320.  
  321. Most of the files used by WWPlus are located in your WWPlus 
  322. directory.  This will be C:\WWPLUS unless you chose another directory 
  323. during installation.  Delete this directory using File Manager.  In 
  324. your Windows directory will be a file named WWPSAVR.SCR, which is the 
  325. screen saver startup.  Delete it.
  326.  
  327. In your Windows\System directory, delete WWPLIBR.VBX.  Four 
  328. other files are installed to this directory: CALL32.DLL, 
  329. IKCOL16.DLL, IKENG16.DLL and IKDSP16.VBX.  These are files that 
  330. may possibly be used by other programs.  If you delete them, 
  331. make backup copies first so that they can be reinstalled if 
  332. another program complains about their absence.
  333.  
  334. Make a backup copy of the file CONTROL.INI in your Windows directory.  
  335. Open CONTROL.INI in NOTEPAD or another text-only editor.  Look for a 
  336. section called [ScreenSaver.WWPSaver], which contains the global 
  337. variables for WWPlus.  Delete the entire section and save the file.
  338.  
  339. Delete your WWPlus program group.  If WWPlus is set to start when you 
  340. run Windows, open the Startup Group and delete the WWPlus icon.  Make 
  341. sure that you have selected "Save Settings on Exit" in the Options 
  342. menu, and close Windows.  WWPlus is now removed.
  343.  
  344. VIII. Obtaining wallpaper images.
  345.  
  346. Any image that can be displayed on your computer may be used as 
  347. wallpaper.  If you regularly use Computer BBS systems or online 
  348. sources such as Compuserve, America Online, or the internet, 
  349. you will find a wealth of images that can be downloaded.  These images 
  350. are usually in the .GIF or .JPG formats to reduce download time.
  351.  
  352. If you obtained this program on disk, there may be images included, 
  353. usually in an \images directory.  A RIGHTS.TXT file may be included in 
  354. this directory describing the user's rights to the images included.
  355.  
  356. The author is maintaining a small collection of his scans of his own 
  357. photos and those of users where permission has been granted.  It is 
  358. available by FTP from redshift.com/arcatpet/wwplus/images Files are in 
  359. .JPG format.  Thumbnails are available at the website

  362. IX.  Getting future Upgrades.
  363.  
  364. When you register WWPlus with the author, you will receive a copy of 
  365. the latest version and a registration key that removes the startup 
  366. screen.  That key file will work with future versions of the program, 
  367. so no upgrade fee will be required.
  368.  
  369. Current versions of WWPlus can always be found on Compuserve in 
  370. several forums, including WINAV, GRAPHSUP, PHOTOFORUM and EDRIVE.  
  371. Current versions are also posted to America OnLine.  Use the keyword 
  372. "Windows" and search the software library for "WWPlus."
  373.  
  374. The author maintains a current copy available for internet FTP.

  385. mirror sites worldwide as well.

  387. Registered users who do not have online access may get a disk copy 
  388. from the author for a fee of $5 ($7 non-US).  Send a short note 
  389. indicating your registered status and requesting the latest copy.  
  390. Please use the same name under which you are registered.
  391.  
  392. X.  Registration and Distribution.
  393.  
  394. WWPlus is shareware.  Free use is extended to any user for a 
  395. reasonable evaluation period;  typical idea of "reasonable" is 30 
  396. days.  If use is continued, the program should be registered with the 
  397. author.  Registration fee is $20.  California registrants please add 
  398. $1.45 sales tax, and foreign registrants should include $1.00 for 
  399. airmail shipping.  All funds should be drawn on a US Dollar account. A 
  400. convenient form for registration is included in the Help 
  401. file (and may be printed from there).  Until you register, there will 
  402. be a startup screen asking you to register which you will have to 
  403. respond to.  When you register, this annoyance will go away. 
  404. Otherwise, this version is complete and un-crippled in any way.
  405.  
  406. As a registration incentive, the author will provide on request two 
  407. free scanned images from your original prints or slides, when sent 
  408. with the registration.
  409.  
  410. Commercial use:  WWPlus may be used commercially, as long as there is 
  411. a registered copy for each computer/terminal that is using it.  
  412. Bulk licensing is available.
  413.  
  414. You may freely distribute WWPlus as long as no fees are charged for 
  415. the program, and all necessary files are included. If you are a 
  416. registered user, do not distribute the file WWP_REG.KEY, which 
  417. identifies you as the user (This identification shows up in the 
  418. "About" box).
